The humble mouse can do a lot more than just point and click, and X-Mouse Button Control intends to unlock its full potential. This free utility allows you to map new functions to mousebuttons. Not only can it assign each button new tasks, it can also make these context-dependent, so that a button's function in one piece of software may not be the same in another.
Using X-Mouse Button Control can be a little daunting at first: there are a lot of options, and the interface, although clean and easy to understand, doesn't hold your hand through the process of assigning them. What it lacks in ease, however, it makes up in versatility: you can create multiple profiles, each of which has its own set of functions. You can even create "layers" or sets of new commands within each profile, allowing you to use your mouse for different functions at different times.
